Last week's episode began with the youngest son Crosby venting with a Real Estate Agent about his troubles with his son's mother Jasmine. I will do a little catching up with you, incase you just started watching. Crosby was introduced to Jabbar, his son, out of the blue last year. Since then he has been conforming to a life of fatherhood, while at the same time reconciling a relationship with Jabbar's mother Jasmine. They have had their struggles which have resulted in Crosby cheating on Jasmine, with his brother, Adam, son's therapist. Crosby has decided he is going to try and win back Jasmine by selling his Boathouse, and purchasing a new "fixer-upper" for his family. Crosby also tarnished the relationship with his brother, Adam, because now the therapist, who was a big asset to Adam's autistic son, Max, will not return any calls to the family. Crosby stopped by Adam's home, trying to talk about his mistake and his big plan for the home, but Adam was not impressed by Crosby's decision and showed him out the door.
Meanwhile Adam is having some issues as well, as he is concerned about the big Prom his daughter, Haddie, will be attending. Haddie has asked her new boyfriend, Alex, who was not thrilled, but decided to go. Alex is older then Haddie and has had a rough life so far. He is a recovering alcoholic and has his own apartment. Haddie's parents, Adam and Kristina, originally did not improve of Haddie's relationship with Alex. Alex seemed to have gotten his life together and, so far, has teated Haddie with the upmost respect and courteousness. Adam is convinced the Prom is only about guys trying to have sex with their Prom dates and has asked his wife to speak to Haddie about having sex.
Sarah, the older Braverman sister, stops by to visit Julia, her younger sister, at work. Julia has confinded in Sarah that she will no longer be able to conceive a child. Julia and her husband, Joel, recently decided to have a second child. They visited a doctor and found out Julia could not conceive anymore. Julia has been obsessed, since then, trying to make the most out of her relationship with her daughter Sydney. It is pretty evident that Julia is hiding her suffering and trying to cope with it on her own. Julia also unintentionally informs Sarah, for the first time, that her daughter, Amber, was not accepted to Berkley. The hurt instantly was seen in Sarah's face, as she couldn't understand why her daughter did not tell her. Sarah is then seen arriving at home, where she asks Amber about Berkley. Amber inferred she didn't tell her mom because she didn't want to make plans or get ideas from her, yet. She was very disapponted and just wanted her mom to listen. Haddie then talks her cousin Amber into going to the prom with her and Alex. Initially, Amber, is reluctant, but was convinced after some persuading.
Sarah has a new found talent in writing. She has recently embarked in writing a play and has captured the attention of Gilliam (Richard Dreyfuss), her father's, Zeek, old army buddy that was a famous theater director. Gilliam is trying to convince Sarah in directing her attention to the play because it has a lot of potential. Sarah is struggling, trying to juggle the responsiblities of a mother and this new profession. Gilliam points out to Sarah, her gift, and encourages her to put herself first for the first time in her life.
Crosby now approaches his sister, Sarah, about his plan for the house. Sarah, preturbed about the entire therapist issue, speaks her mind to Crosby about his actions. She thinks Crosby his making an honest effort, though, and promises him she will stop by and check out the house. Crosby also wanted to ask Julia and Joel, but failed to mention Adam. Crosby stated Adam hates him and didn't think he would bother asking him to come.
Kristina spoke to her duaghter about sex while buying the Prom dress. Amber also told her mom, Sarah, that she will be going to the prom as well with Haddie and Alex. After showing off their Prom dresses at Adam's house, the two venture off to the Prom with their dates. After they leave Sarah speaks to her brother Adam about Crosby. She reminds Adam that Crosby made a big mistake, but he is their brother and he must forgive him. After stating he would not support Crosby's decision about the house, Sarah tells Adam, Crosby is suffering and he needs his brother to be there.
The prom seems to be going well, the two couples were having fun. Amber meets up with her friend, Kelsey, who asks about college. Amber gets emotional and asks her date to take her home. Meanwhile Haddie and Alex are dancing and Haddie brings up the possibility of getting a room after the Prom. Alex, again being a complete gentleman, tells Haddie they will know when the time is right. Amber comes home to find her mother Sarah working on the play.Sarah tries to talk to Amber, but Amber made it known she does not want anymore advise and she wants to do things her own way. Haddie and Alex make it back to his apartment where they decide the time is now. Haddies parents are waiting in bed as the clock ticks closer to curfew. Haddie makes it home on time and is greeted by her parents. Adam is relieved she is home, on time, but as Haddie closes her bedroom door she has a certain smile on her face about her night with Alex.
Julia finally breaks down to her mother in regards to her inability to get prgnant. Sydney, expresses, to her mom that she is smothering her with attention. Julia becomes very emotional and is comforted by her parents. This was a the"tearjerker" portion of the episode as you can feel Julia's emotional pain and lost. Later that night Joel talks with his wife and she again breaks down in tears, telling him how much she loves him.
The next morning Crosby, Sarah, Julia and Joel are at the new house Crosby went and purchased. After walking through they all expressed their concern that the house needs too much work. Crosby is about to fall apart, thinking he made a bad decision, when big brother Adam walks in to convince him together they can make it work. They then embrace, reminding us that family sticks together no matter what happens.
Parenthood continues to enlighten us with its family value storylines. I know my husband will be struggling, himself, on Prom night. Knowing him, he will be following the limo to and from the prom. I guess that is a tough night for any father knowing what they were up to on their Prom night. I think Amber's character is struggling deeply and is very confused. She looks to be heading toward an emotional episode. It will be interesting to see if Sarah will spend her time helping her daughter or writing the play. Julia's situation is heart wrenching, watching her struggle and hide her emotions until her breakdown brought tears to my eyes. Crosby is in a rough emotional state, as well. I don't think buying the house is going to fix things like Crosby hopes. But, Adam's support for his brother in the end, brought a big smile to my face, as the family, again, put their differences aside to remind us how important it is to be there for each other. Tune in tonight, the previews for this week's episode were intense.
